Reiki is an ancient healing modality, traditionally taught orally. It differs from other healing modalities because of the initiation process involved: the attunements received during the course work direct on an energy level to open up the student as a channel and also to connect the student to this special tradition and lineage of healing which is The Usui system of natural healing. Reiki is not a religion, a cult or belief system. Reiki is just about expanding and becoming more of who you already are!
History of Reiki
Reiki is an ancient healing method, used over 2000 years ago like Jesus and Buddha. Its origin dates back thousand years to ancient Tibet and has re-emerged in the 19th Century through Mikao Usui.
Mikao Usui was born August 15th, 1865 in Japan and died at the age of 62. He was educated by missionaries, became a Christian and acted as principal and minister at the Dodisha University in Kyoto.
While teaching, in the late 1890's, his students questioned him about the healing miracles of Jesus Christ and challenged him to prove his beliefs by either demonstrating an healing miracle or recounting one he had witnessed. Dr Usui believes in the bible but could not perform a miracle or tell of one he experienced. He thought he had failed as a teacher if he could not give his students the proof they needed to serve God fully. So he resigned and went out into the world, searching for the keys to the healing method of Jesus.
Usui set out to America, lived and studied other religions and philisophies for seven years. He didn't find what he was looking for the the Christian scriptures, so he put all his efforts into the Buddist's writings since Buddha and his desciples had also performed healing miricles.
Usui learnt Chinese to be able to read the Sutras, travelled to India, lear Sanskrit to study the Indian Sutras but to no avail. On his return to Japan, after much perseverance and tanacity, found the key to his search.
He was in a Zen monastery when he found the "Buddha's manual healing system" with some symbols and phrases relating to healing: he knew they had something to do with activating and directing universal energy but did not know what they meant and how to use them.
There is a lot of descrepancies and rumours of how Reiki came to the western world, regardless of this Reiki is here to stay and share with all of humanity.
